From South Africa to Bali: Chef Damian Pentelow Ignites Padma Resort Ubud’s Dining Scene From South Africa to Bali: Chef Damian Pentelow Ignites Padma Resort Ubud’s Dining Scene

Elevating its dining experience, Padma Resort Ubud is thrilled to introduce its new Executive Chef, Damian Pentelow, whose unique culinary vision and journey bring fresh inspiration to the award winning resort’s dining scene. Rooted in the traditions of his South African childhood, Chef Damian’s passion for cooking grew from the warmth of his  grandmothers' kitchens and the art of “Braai”. Derived from the Afrikaans word that means grill or roast, Braai refers to grilling food in open flames, it is also a social setting, which brings people together to enjoy food, drinks, and good company around the fire. This early foundation in bold, fire-infused flavours has become the heart of his culinary style. It beautifully resonates with Indonesia’s traditions, which highlight the joy of togetherness through food, such as makan tengah (shared meals) and arisan (social gatherings). We are delighted to welcome the vibrant spirit of South African culture into the resort.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtIpGCxGm9IDamian’s career took off in the fine dining restaurants of South Africa, followed by an enriching tenure on the luxury cruise liner. He later took on a Head Chef role at a popular tapas bar in South Africa, which eventually led him to eight adventurous years with Club Med across Southeast Asia. In 2018, he was promoted to Executive Chef, becoming the youngest to hold this position in Club Med’s APAC region, showcasing his dedication and talent. At Padma Resort Ubud, Chef Damian is set to bring his philosophy of honouring simplicity and origin through vibrant, globally inspired flavours. He envisions an elevated yet relaxed dining experience that reflects the organic harmony of Ubud’s lush landscapes. “Learning is continuous,” Damian shares. “I gain insights from books and, importantly, from my team. The kitchen is a place of endless knowledge.” Looking forward, Chef Damian is excited to contribute to Padma Resort Ubud’s legacy of memorable dining while celebrating Bali’s evolving fine dining scene. With talented chefs converging on the island, he sees a bright future for culinary innovation in Bali.

A Journey of Heartfelt Service: Reza Lika A Journey of Heartfelt Service: Reza Lika

A wise man once said, "Do something you love, and you'll never work a day in your life." At Padma Hotels, we are truly blessed to have passionate individuals as part of our family, who work from the heart and pour their love into what is no longer a job, but a home. Many of our dedicated #PadmaFamily have been with us for over a decade, and one of the team members we feel especially fortunate to have is Reza Lika from Padma Hotel Bandung.11 Years and Still Going StrongReza, our Restaurant Manager, has been part of Padma Hotel Bandung since July 2013. The hospitality industry is his true passion, especially in Food & Beverage. For Reza, working in this field is an opportunity to connect with people and create priceless moments, as every day brings a new story. From Breakfast Conversations to a Newfound Family BondOne of Reza’s most treasured memories traces back to early 2017, during his time as a Captain at The Restaurant, a role he held before ascending to Restaurant Manager. It was here that he first encountered an elderly couple, whom he affectionately calls “Kakek”  (grandpa) and “Nenek” (grandma).  Frequent visitors of the hotel, they often dined with their extended family, and from their very first breakfast, Reza felt an instant connection. A simple conversation over tea quickly blossomed into a lasting friendship, and by the end of that morning, Kakek, in a gesture of heartfelt generosity, tipped not only Reza but the entire restaurant team. As the years passed, their bond deepened, with Kakek and Nenek returning annually to mark special family occasions. In 2021, Reza was even honoured with an invitation to their grandson’s ceremony - an invitation that, although he couldn’t accept due to work commitments, further solidified their relationship. Each visit grew grander, with Reza orchestrating family gatherings of up to 50 people, ensuring every detail, from team-building activities to flawlessly coordinated dinners was executed with care. What touched Reza the most, however, was Kakek’s unmatched generosity. Twice, Kakek gifted Umrah (pilgrimage) packages to his family members, and in 2023, Reza was moved to tears when he, too, was invited to join them on this sacred journey.Ensure the Most Memorable Experiences For Reza, ensuring guests’ memorable experiences isn’t just about service; it’s about building relationships. He believes in close communication, not only during their stay but also after they leave. Reza strives to turn each guest into an ambassador of Padma Hotel Bandung, forging lasting connections that extend beyond their visit.Reza’s journey at Padma Hotel Bandung exemplifies the impact of genuine service. His dedication, warmth, and sincere care for every guest create lasting memories that stay with them. For the guests of Padma Hotel Bandung and Padma Journals’ readers, Reza would like to share his humble and sincere philosophy: "Bukan harta ataupun jabatan, sebaik-baiknya manusia adalah yang bermanfaat untuk orang sekitarnya", which translates to, "True wealth is not measured by material possessions or titles, but by the positive impact one has on those around them" - a belief he firmly holds. And to Kakek and Nenek, if you are reading this, Reza would like to extend his warmest greetings and sincere thanks for the friendship that he will forever cherish.

On the Run: Meet Paul the Distance Chaser On the Run: Meet Paul the Distance Chaser

Our mountain retreat, Padma Resort Ubud, recently welcomed its new Marketing & Communications Manager, Chris Paul. Having transitioned from Padma Hotel Bandung after a memorable 1,104km road trip with his family, Paul is excited to embark on this new adventure in Bali and explore fresh opportunities in his field.Let’s get to know Paul a little more. Beyond his professional pursuits, Paul is passionate about trail running, a hobby he’s been dedicated to since 2011. He was once a national runner representing East Java, where he’s originally from. Balancing work and life, he always finds time to hit the trails and enjoy the mountains that surround his new home. Now that he’s living in Bali, Paul often runs after work, setting a great example that you can always make time for what you love. When Paul isn't out on a run or hitting the trails, he loves hiking – often solo! His favourite time to hike is when it’s quietest, usually during the Ramadan period. Even with a packed schedule, Paul never misses a chance to escape to the mountains, fully embracing the peace and beauty of nature. If you're staying at Padma Resort Ubud, here’s Paul's recommended route: three loops around the jogging track, totalling a 5km distance with an elevation gain of over 170m. He hopes that with his addition to the Padma Resort Ubud team, he can bring the success of Padma Run Bandung to Ubud next year. Recognising the thriving running community in Bali, he aims to raise awareness of the hotel through a shared passion for running.Other than conquering mountains or roads, Paul enjoys listening to punk rock and playing bass, and spending time with his family. He’s always a pleasure to chat with, so feel free to say hello when you see him around the resort!
