Welcoming the Year of the Snake at Padma Hotel Semarang Welcoming the Year of the Snake at Padma Hotel Semarang

Dating back centuries to migration and trade, Chinese culture has become an integral part of Indonesia, influencing its cuisine and adding vibrant colours to the nation’s rich festivals. One of the most celebrated traditions is Chinese New Year, or what we call Imlek in Indonesia. Across major cities like Jakarta, Semarang, and Medan, streets come alive with colourful lanterns and traditional red decorations, symbolising luck and prosperity. Families, especially Chinese-Indonesians, gather for special meals, with Yu Sheng (prosperity toss) as a must-have dish.A cherished part of the celebration is the tradition of giving Angpao, red envelopes filled with money, symbolising blessings, and good fortune for the year ahead. These are typically given by married couples or elders to children and younger family members, fostering a spirit of sharing. The festivities are made even more lively with Barongsai (lion dance) performances, also believed to bring luck, adding to the joyful atmosphere of Imlek in Indonesia.Recognised as a national holiday, Imlek has become a celebration for everyone, inviting all to indulge in the festive atmosphere and Chinese New Year delicacies. This year, Padma Hotels’ destination in Central Java, Padma Hotel Semarang is ready to welcome the Year of the Snake with two exciting programmes. The first is a lavish celebration in the iconic Pandanaran Grand Ballroom, renowned for its 10-metre-high ceiling and capacity to host up to 4,000 guests. Every year, during the festive season, our mountain retreat, Padma Resort Ubud goes all out with extraordinary decorations. From Santa’s hut and illuminated deer in the Agroforestry Garden to the enchanting snow town centrepiece in the lobby, the highlight that wowed everyone last year was the magical appearance of snow in Bali, gracing the resort’s garden. Most importantly, every decoration is crafted using recycled and eco-conscious materials, carefully collected by our staff throughout the year. Their commitment to sustainability ensures that nothing goes to waste, creating a festive atmosphere that is both joyful and mindful of the environment. This dedication reflects our ongoing efforts to harmonise celebration with responsibility, making each holiday season at the resort even more special.Padma Resort Ubud's family working together to build a 6-metre-tall Christmas treeAfter several consecutive years of delighting guests with mesmerising décor, the team at Padma Resort Ubud is gearing up for this year’s holiday season with even more spectacular surprises. As you step into the lobby, you will be welcomed by charming garlands crafted from repurposed plastic bottles. In the courtyard, you will see a stunning 6-metre-tall Christmas tree, meticulously assembled from 5,200 plastic bottles, accompanied by a delightful snowman made from the same material. The star of the lobby, however, is the Christmas Market centerpiece, created by the talented team at Padma Resort Ubud using eggshells, waste coffee grounds, used egg cartons, ice cream sticks, natural sand, clay, and forest moss. We are incredibly proud of this creation and excited to share this festive joy with all our guests. But the visual delights don’t stop here.Snowman made of plastic bottlesWalking towards Payangan Lounge, you will encounter another Christmas tree, made entirely of rolls of jute ropes. At The Spa, the festive spirit continues with garlands crafted from dried leaves and corn husks, while a Christmas tree made from banana fibre rope stands proudly.
